The Marvels Project

I picked up 2 Marvel titles- The Marvels Project written by Criminal writer Ed Brubaker and Amazing Spider-Man #600, the $4.99 oversized issue.

The Marvels Project is 1 of 8, and includes a big roster of Marvel artists for covers (McNiven, Vines, Hollowell, Epting, Prel, Jimenez), with Brubaker and Epting writing, and Dave Stewart on color art. There is some intriguing late 1930's art with a taste of character- Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Nick Fury. Brubaker adds depth to characters, but dipping in the well of the Nazi's as enemies..but we'll see. I will pick up issue 2, slated for Sept. 9th

KS Spidey (and redheads)

At Midtown Comics last week, I scored the King Size Spider-Man summer special. Colleen Coover's art is the star, with "Un-enchanted evening" the starter story, staring Mary Jane Watson. In fact, there are many redheads-- Hellcat, Marvel Girl, Scarlet Witch (with Medusa as "redundant. already have three redheads.".

Mary Jane's story begins with a night with models Millie and Patsy (Walker, as in Hellcat). Patsy goes through a portal and a team of female hero-types, with many redheads and She-Hulk, another female favorite of mine.

If you missed this summer special, there's also a Keith Giffen "Street Monsters" story and a "Paperboy Showdown" by Chris Giarrusso, also in the fun cute style that pits Spidey with Venom to deliver Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) paper.

Picked up 3 weeks, for $36 worth of comics. 3 Trinities, and assorted other titles.

I haven't done much more than look at the cover flow art, and download free Anderson Cooper and Variant Edition vidcasts. I can't believe the studios try to make us believe they make no money from all those TV shows and series you can buy on iTunes. Give me a break!

While I'm sharing this, how about my Baby Taylor, only a few months old. Was working on "Santa Claus is coming to town", "Blue Christmas" and "Auld Lang Syne". I think the sound for a 3/4 size is excellent, and it's so light to play after using an electric solely.

Hope you are all having a good holiday season! Patrons and staff have been giving us cookies and candy. I gave Ref. some green tea and popcorn today.

Leaving tomorrow for Chicago! The weather has turned to near record highs- tough for the 45, 000 marathoners and the 1.5 million spectators. Have to work until 9, then pack - still haven't unpacked all in the new house.

I read the first arc The gunslinger born of the Dark Tower comics, but I don't intend to continue. I think if I had read the source books I would be invested. It's like the Buffy comics; without the TV characterization the comic reads flat to me.
the seven-issue miniseries will be released in a hardcover collection on November 7 with extra material that includes a feature on the methodology of colorist Richard Isanove and a message from Stephen King. The second Dark Tower miniseries, The Long Road Home, is slated to begin in February 2008, when the creative team of David, Lee and Furth will reprise their roles in the making of the comic, beneath the watchful eye of King himself.

director Julie Taymor and the show's backers are looking for a space to put it on. Bono and The Edge, who in this context sorta sound like a superhero team themselves, developed both the book and the lyrics for the production

Getting caught up-- got last weeks comics, and only 5 in the pile. Y the Last Man, DMZ, Two Gun 2 (trying more Boom! Studio stuff), Jack of Fables 10 and Rex Libris 8 (natch).

I recently learned that books that used to be called "horror" in the bookstore or library, are now labeled "dark fantasy" because of the glut of King wannabees in the 80s. Speaking of King, just finished son Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box. An aging metal god buys a ghost on the internet...horror, or dark fantasy, ensues. Judas, the lead character, also finds more of himself and how he treated his young, goth girlfriends (boys, take note)

Except that he hadn’t kept her safe, he knew that now. …what he thought of as a personal strength- he was happy to know about her only what she wanted him to know- was something more like selfishness. A childish willingness to remain in the dark, to avoid distressing conversations, upsetting truths. He had feared her secrets- or more specifically, the emotional entanglements that might come from knowing them.

Redhead RunnerGirl

I ran a 5K yesterday, with Shoreturtle, PhillyGirl and PhilliesGirl. It was a beautiful warm day, and I had a personal best on my run! Of course, shoreturtle blazed by all of us. We got bagels, ice cream, OJ, energy drinks, run T shirt. It was a well organized and good run. Then I was walloped for the day from getting up early and the all out run.

Comic wise, I'm now only 1 issue behind in 52, reading up to 52/49. Batwoman captured, Nightwing and Renee- the new Question- go rescue her from Intergang. I'm so glad Didio and DC didn't kill off Nightwing as proposed. The science squad is a little confusing to me, but I understood Black Adam storming Oolong Island and their capture of him. The metal men, Professor Morrow, I just don't know their context. These last few issues have been big Blamo! fight scenes and captures.

Reading Dark Tower 3. The art is still without fault, and the story is unfolding, but why don't I love it? I'm sure if I read the source books.

Spider-Man week in NYC

520 pages of Batgirl!

Two nice people have emailed me in that there will be a Showcase edition of Batgirl!

I read the Dark Tower, issue 2. Peter David is taking us deeper into the story, and the road trip begins. There is also the introduction of the love interest. Jae Lee's art was just as striking, but there were a few panels were I felt the shading was just too dark. I guess you can chalk it up to mood, but painting over such dark shading will give this effect. Still a great read overall.

The Atom was off on a trip that involved his high school bully tormentor, and his sixteen year old love/crush-- who of course, married the bully. Simone has made me care more about Ryan Choi than I thought I would, and I like the pencils of Choi much better than than the Byrne run.

Hero genre mash-ups

I read Slate most days for political and social content. I was happy to see this frontwebpage article on Comics that reinvent the superhero genre.

Mary Jane's image from Spider-man loves Mary Jane is the cover image, and the list includes some of my fav's from recent years: Love Fights, Living in Infamy, Ex Machina, Astro City, and the evercool SMLMJ. Although McKeever is planning to depart the title also, so a new writer and David Hahn as new artist-- let's hope the new team can carry on at the same level.

Reading the most recent Girls last night gave me the normal eye raising and moments of humor. The cover of issue 24, the series finale is here. Man, will I miss Y and Girls. They have been great reads that I look forward to, and have for years. And 52 at issue 37.
