Two nice people have emailed me in that there will be a Showcase edition of Batgirl!

I read the Dark Tower, issue 2. Peter David is taking us deeper into the story, and the road trip begins. There is also the introduction of the love interest. Jae Lee's art was just as striking, but there were a few panels were I felt the shading was just too dark. I guess you can chalk it up to mood, but painting over such dark shading will give this effect. Still a great read overall.

The Atom was off on a trip that involved his high school bully tormentor, and his sixteen year old love/crush-- who of course, married the bully. Simone has made me care more about Ryan Choi than I thought I would, and I like the pencils of Choi much better than than the Byrne run.

Lastly, look at the faces of Wonder Woman & Power Girl. Wondy's face has LIFE. Her eyes are alive.

Spidey's load

Marvel is really bonkers regarding Spidey these days. In Spider-Man: Reign, Peter finds he has killed Mary Jane with his 'radioactive fluid'. Really? I know Quesada and the editors at Marvel have been wanting to jettison the marriage-- but biohazard spunk? A new low for a beloved character, and Marvel. I think I'd like to add that fluid to the Cup-O-Joe.

Bryan pointed out this much better fate for Mary Jane: as little red-riding hood.

Recent reads:
DMZ 15 continues with an insurgent storyline, involving US peacekeepers, the Army, and UN. "Trustwell Corporation. Terrorism for hire. Stumbled onto a big and difficult story." I guess I miss the more photojournalism aspects of the story , while Matt is in deep cover. My enjoyment of this comic is waning.

She-Hulk 15
"Hope it's you Bruce. I'm Hulk-lite. Hulk with half the calories." Jennifer struggles against Hulk villians, like the Abomination, and as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent.

Fell 7 was a single police interview room story, with a scumbag murderer getting off due to a defense lawyer. I did like the appearance of a redhead DA- Templesmith's art and is so dark and scratchy, with some shocking color as contrast.

Walking Dead 34 has Rick, Michonne and a few from the Gov camp on route to the prison. Things have changed there, as the final panels show. Next issue should reveal more, but while I'm interested, on WD it's more a mild interest.

Hero genre mash-ups

I read Slate most days for political and social content. I was happy to see this frontwebpage article on Comics that reinvent the superhero genre.

Mary Jane's image from Spider-man loves Mary Jane is the cover image, and the list includes some of my fav's from recent years: Love Fights, Living in Infamy, Ex Machina, Astro City, and the evercool SMLMJ. Although McKeever is planning to depart the title also, so a new writer and David Hahn as new artist-- let's hope the new team can carry on at the same level.

Reading the most recent Girls last night gave me the normal eye raising and moments of humor. The cover of issue 24, the series finale is here. Man, will I miss Y and Girls. They have been great reads that I look forward to, and have for years. And 52 at issue 37.
