I read some comics on the train to NY, where Shoreturtle ran an amazing 1/2 marathon!
It was so cool to see him run through Times Square, only a block from our sweet hotel, The Muse.
Run Photos of Central Park, Times Square, and West Side Hwy to Battery Park. Then visitor L from VA came up last night for some food, talk, and Wii carnival games.

I've been sort of wishy-washy on Trinity, but read 6- Trinity 8 together-- maybe the way to read them is to bunch a few together instead of the weekly taste. Busiak adds a lot more than just the normal wallop punch, including thoughts on the nature of the three: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman. What do people think of them? Their relationship to each other? And the tarot card reader, Morgaine, and Enigma stories are starting to gel. Guess I'll keep buying.

DMZ 31 is part 3 of the Blood in the Game storyline. Democratic elections in the DMZ, interference and murder from Trustwell Corporation..a highly charged time as election day comes around.

Justice Society 17 contains a cute scene with redhead Maxine, and a monkey. It continues the Gog storyline. Sadly, I've never read Kingdom Come so I'm outside this one a bit.

Reading Fables 9: Sons of Empire, the last trade the library owns until 10, The Good Prince arrives.

The Guilty Ones

Went to see Spring Awakening on Broadway. I liked it. It didn't pack the emotional punch I thought, but the voices were outstanding and a few songs were excellent. One of the leads is the Blake Bashoff - he plays Karl, Alex's boyfriend on Lost.

Thanks to a NY train ride, I read 7 comics.

Buffy the VS 12
Drew Goddard (Lost writer) takes on Buffy in this arc. Everyone's hot over the Buffy with a chick scene. It was funny to see most of the scooby gang discover her and Satsu (is that her name?) together. Xander's "beautiful burning eye" was especially funny, as was his normal geeky pursuit of a girl. And our Andrew- that will be comic fun. Beautiful cover, well written, and in the spirit of what we love of the Buffyverse.

Justice Society 13
The overcrowding of the JSA comes to play in trying to find space for new JSA'ers. Sad to say I've never read Kingdom Come, so the Gog ref's-- I'm following but don't really understand. There are getting to be so many characters I have to keep flipping to the front to see their names and summary.

Let's see, I also read the latest Rex Libris, Birds of Prey, the new Doctor Who...have a stack at home too. I'm reading People of the Book-- dedicated "for the librarians".

Mundane world of the library

Batgirl - Detective Comics #359, Carmine Infantino - pencils

Uh huh! Got my free professional badge number for April's New York Comicon! And the Friday has 6 hours of trade show for just dealers, pros, and librarians! Of course, most of the artists and big name guests are never there, but it is a great time to visit tables that are swamp city later.

Just saw that the Luna Brothers have a new project. I really loved Girls and Ultra, so this is a must for me to pick up.

It doesn't seem like a festive holiday season (yet?). I think money and mortgage and endless war has made all of us tense and not hopeful during these last few years. Gas costs might go to record levels by Thxgiving-- but I am happy to go to Cooperstown, NY for Thanksgiving, and finally visit the Hall of Fame even with an expensive drive!

Superheroes and criminals

Black Canary 2

I am enjoying the new Black Canary series, mostly because I followed the storyline develop out of Birds of Prey,and watching her rescue Sin from becoming an assassin into becoming her daughter. Ollie and Dinah deal with his proposal and her ex had been written well by Bedard alo. Have issue 3 sitting in my pile.

Criminal 8 Lawless part 3
"After all the years he'd tried to be anything but his father, was there some piece of that bastard in him anyway?"
Brubaker and Phillips continue to ring my bell with this crime noir series.
Tracy and Mallory get involved, and guys looking for him turns into a street gun battle. Plus, the last page has a redhead in a library! The team from Sleeper is elevating their work again!

Buried alive
"She's not on the team for the totem-- or her animal powers..She's on the team because she'll fight."
Gene Ha's art really makes you connected to the collapsing building with Mari and Roy trapped within. Horizontal panels make you feel like the twisted metal and beams are bearing down on them.

Four titles starring female characters from DC! I know I am drawn to these books, but there are more female-led comic books in the last few years. These, along with She-Hulk and Spider-Man loves MJ on the Marvel side are on my pull list.

Geoff Johns, Dale Eaglesham

Stargirl helps Maxine create a costumed identity. While she's very cute, she could get a side job as an elf at the Macy's Santa display. The women of the JSA are playing a significant role these days, from Power Girl to Stargirl to Maxine. Yes, sometimes their depictions are comicMaxim, the fear at an ambush and the growth of the female characters still makes JSA a good read. I also like the positive moments, in the dark and moody gloom of many of the other titles I read.
Not to say there isn't the very serious storyline of murdering descendents of former JSA members by Captain Nazi and crew.

The Helmet of Fate: Black Alice 1
Black Alice (Lori Lechlin) made a recent dramatic appearance in Birds of Prey, I was interested in her own storyline. She's a goth outsider at her high school, trying to resist using her powers against the jocks and people who torment her. She's lonely, her dad is drunk and angry recently, and her mother was brought back at nearly zombie level. This title involves the "be careful what you wish for" moral, where Black Alice is granted her darkest desires by the Helmet of Fate. This character has a strong potential future-- she's like the Hot Topic superheroine of the day. "She can steal the magick of anybody"

Birds of Prey 102
Mismatch

Oracle's backstory with the Spy Smasher Katarina, of two brilliant and driven women who compete at academics and on the track, was a good one. I like the intimate connection to Oracle, who only orchestrates her team against the villians. Here, the line of morality of what Oracle is and how the Spy Smasher considers the consequences to her bad deeds then does them anyway. The team still has rough edges, and I guess Manhunter will be out soon.

Catwoman 64
"I suppose that's why I like Gotham so much. This place on the other hand...It's just too damn sunny." Catwoman goes to Metropolis to steal a snow globe for The Calculator; hidden under steel and concrete at Lexcorp. Her jaded observations of Gotham vs. Metropolis are witty, and coming up against Luthor is an interesting ride. The Halle Berry Catwoman movie was on last night- I've never seen nor do I want to. I'll stick with Pfeiffer's Catwoman here.
