Tomorrow: many librarians converge

Tomorrow with three other awesome librarians I am presenting "Adult Graphic Novels for Every Library". I get a small slot to champion a few favorites: DMZ, Criminal, Jack of Fables, Wonder Woman and Rex Libris. Hope it all goes well. The conference is in Long Branch on the ocean, but the weather here is in the 50s so it won't be as fabulous as last weekend.

TV squad review and videos from NYCC on Venture Brothers and Battlestar and Moonlight I know some of you are fans of these shows, but I don't watch them...I don't know where this Moonlight panel came from, because I don't think it was on my highlighted schedule, and I didn't get to see Mr. Jason Dohring at all.

Alan Tudyk back on TV! - if ABC picks up the comedy- (Wash from Firefly!)

Iron Man on TV

Warner Brothers and Superman
The federal ruling, which gives the heirs a stake in rights sold 71 years ago, could put a serious crimp on future plans for one of the studio's most enduring -- and lucrative -- franchises, especially if co-creator Joe Shuster's heirs follow suit in five years, when they are eligible to do so.

Vertigo the edge

I have notes on a few panels I wanted to share:

Vertigo:Welcome to the Edge
Friday panel 4PM was much better than the Saturday one I hear- that one basically opened the floor to "why Vertigo sucks". That's pretty demoralizing to the excellent creators on the panel...

But Friday, an excellent panel that included favorites Brian Wood, Brian Azzarello and Grant Morrison riffing on Seaguy- and how in the teen Seaguy title matadors will have to dress bulls in stockings--and how Pablo the beekeeper talks like a bee but recorded it will say "you have to get out of here!".

I've read We3 and All Star Superman, and always thought of Grant as very serious in tone and story-- but that accent added to some funny stories. And his pictures always show him not smiling, but he was grinning all over.

Buckingham discussed Fables #75, the big war, big changes issue where "no one is safe" and the "makeup of the homeland changes" It will be a double size 56 pager.

Sad to see The Un-Men end. Also Loveless and 100 Bullets end. Am interested in Air (Cairo writer), The Unknown Soldier, and the Northlanders with Brian Wood teaming with Ryan Kelly (they worked on Local together). Maybe House of Mystery or Madame Xanadu (Matt Wagner). Or Greatest Hits by Tischman and Fabry, about "The Mates"- how superheroes would be like rock stars. The covers are takes on classic albums.

I have a lot of great photos and some notes, but I spent the day in ICU with my sister and family, so clearly life comes first. But read those great posts!

New York Comiccon: 2 Days

Photos: Dan Slott- Marvel
Ghost Hunters Jason and Grant

Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Loveless)

2 very full days at the NY Comiccon. Overall, I wouldn't miss it for seeing the creators I did- professionals I've met before at the MidJersey Comicon or Wizard or NYCC, and for some great panels. Garth Ennis! Ghost Hunters with Josh from Destination: Truth! Vertigo with Brian Wood and Azzarello and Mark Buckingham!

But this time I had my first twinges of not liking the show. I never got to say more than hi to Gail Simone, or even get to Ethan Van Sciver. I knew getting one of 40 Alex Ross tickets was impossible when the lines started hours before. I didn't see Frank Miller, or Jim Lee, as expected.

There are always people more committed or crazier than I am to wait for a whole day for 2 minutes face time.

At least phillygirl was with me to enjoy the con and the fun moments, and beers with Rock& Roll Librarian.

There were times when hundreds of manga kids in gothic lolita costumes clogged the aisles, or camped out in packs by the panels. I guess my comics experience is to meet artists and writers, and learn about their creations---but the cosplayers are more Look at me! Take photos of me!

I almost got poked by a dang cosplay umbrella!

Maybe because their Japanese or Korean creators are an ocean away and aren't there. I guess if I ever went in costume, I'd want attention to all the time it took. I'd rather just hear some writer speak though.

Also, jam ups around Selma Blair, Seth Green-- any TV or movie star-- and Neil Gaiman made it hard to get by. I read after we left Sat night they had to close the downstairs by the panel rooms. One time there was this mass of humanity at the end of the escalator-- it was for the Lucas films preview.

There were 'Excellent moments':
Riccardo Bucherrelli signed my DMZ one and sketched a Matty for me and a Zee for phillygirl.

Accosting Grant and Jason from Ghost Hunters and getting a photo of them, and seeing Josh from Destination: Truth moderate the panel

Listening to Garth Ennis speak for an hour

Grant Morrison's thick accent explaining Seaguy- he was flippin' hysterical

Having a few moments to speak with Brian Wood about DMZ and Local

Hanging out with Rags Morales while he sketched

Taking a photo with Brian Azzarello

More photos to come. Have to work today at the library!

Con Con

So ready to get to NY tomorrow for the con (and ready to be O-U-T of work). The weather is a far cry from the last two February NYCC's- 80 on Friday and 79 on Sat. Last year the upper level was terrarium hot in Feb; I wonder if I will be baking.

Phillygirl is coming up late afternoon to join me and we are going nerd-wild Fri and Sat at the show. Librarians, go see Ty in the 12 Noon Helping Libraries with Comics for Teens.

As everyone has noted, the con is so huge-mongous now that it is overwhelming. I can't begin to run down all the artist alley after just looking at the Special Guest list. I just hope to hit some Vertigo panels, DC Nation- see some creators- browse the exhibit floor for goodies- and see some wingnut costumes.

I'll try to send some phone pics - usually the figures look best rather than people- and will fill everyone in on who I got to meet!

ides of april

Sorry so little posting, but April has been draining. My sister is in the hospital, quite serious, and that has caused a lot of phone calls. Work started with a demoralizing prank, but was sort of peaceful today. At least I went for a short run, even though the weather was only in the 50s.

Hoping for a great time at this weeks New York Comiccon to help me stay sane.
Redhead Fangirl's tips for attending a big comicon: (posted June 7, 2007 originally).

1. No matter how big a fan or how excited you are to meet an artist or writer, they might not look up from sketching even when you are buying their work for a friend -- or they might ignore you for someone 'better' or 'bigger' -- or they might look at you and not respond while you are trying to have your minute with them )-- or they might have met you four times before at previous cons but never remember you

2. Big name artists (Van Sciver, Morales, Oeming) can be incredibly friendly and giving of their time, even though they are swamped for sketches and autographs.

3. Girls are treated differently. You'll be hit on, or treated like you can't possibly be a real fan. Just roll with it, and if you feel uncomfortable, just leave the table or panel.

4. You need cash. Most artists don't take credit, and some dealers do, but not all.

5. Even if you get to the con over an hour before the doors open, you'll still probably wait in a long line to get on the floor an hour or so later. New York con, like 2 hours. Go to the bathroom. Get a drink and a snack or have one. Bring things to read (comics)!

6. Order your badge before the show or else you might also wait in a line before waiting in the main line.

7. Print out the guest and artist alley list. Go through your comics at home and bring the ones you want signed. However...

8. Chances are you will carry those comics around and won't get the chance to get a bracelet to meet even get in line to wait (Geoff Johns) , or you give up from the wait (Jim Lee).

9. Look at the programming schedule before hand. No matter what you decide, you will end up doing about 1/2 of what you want, because you run into people, or need to eat, or spend more time shopping. Pick the 2 or 3 most important things for the day.

10. Go with an easygoing friend who is willing to split off if you want do different things.

11. Sketches can cost $20 or $150. Hot artists will have their daily list filled very early, so if you have to have that Hawkgirl sketch by XYZ artist, get there as soon as you can.

12. Take the train to avoid parking hassles and fees. But count on the train being late (NYCC- had to de-train and wait on a freezing cold platform for the next train).

13. DC and Marvel usually put up a signing schedule for you to look over once you get to the con to help you plan. Sometimes you will be unexpectedly surprised by who will be there (Gail Simone).

14. Most creators will take a picture with you, or let you take one of them, but try to ask if it's OK. Then don't dork out like I did with Brian Wood and leave the comics he just signed because you're all gaga from meeting him and taking a picture. You will have to return and say "i'm a dork" to the DC staff and him.

Liquid

Recent events have been kind of rough on me, so I can only hope things will get better. One coworker said Mars is in Cancer now and that means conflict and war.

I just started pouring over the programming calendar for the NY Comiccon. Phillygirl and I hope to see Garth Ennis. There are X-files 2 previews and Doctor Who. Vertigo panel with Morrison and Wood. A Spotlight on Gail Simone. Shoreturtle loves Ghost Hunters, and there is a panel with the main dudes with the Destination: Truth guy. Women in Comics panel.

I love getting in 10 AM- 3 PM before the public with my "Professional" badge. I'll take being happy where I can!

At R's Pulp show a few weeks ago, I picked up the entire Liquid Television series (dealer compiled- not all out on DVD) I didn't remember how disturbing some of the skits were - but at least creative and not lame "reality TV" that floods MTV for years. Winter Steele (biker girl), CutUp Camera, PsychoGrams...

Today's "It figures" From the Ten-Cent Plague:
(EC Comics) "It was the strangest thing to me that Charlie Gaines was publishing all these Bible stories about love and kindness..."and he was the nastiest son of a bitch on the face of the Earth"

So far, my big ad experiment has added up to $2.19. If you click the Google Sense Ads, I might actually make a dollar. Only once or twice have I seen a link that I was unsure of . So click away and help a sista out!

What kind?

I really want some comments on what happened today. I'm not one to beg for comments, but please give me your opinions on this:

After being out sick yesterday, Today I went to work and my coworker (27 years on the job) called me to our ref office. He said that he just read an email our manager sent (24 years on the job) that said she was resigning June 2, with a sentence or two about enjoying working with us.

Without a book, the background is that my morale has been pretty low this past year- waiting on a promotion that hasn't come after almost 6 years of very hard work; very angry patrons; etc.

My relationship with my boss- I don't agree with her all the time, and she is an emotionally distant person who doesn't share much. So while an email without any discussion might not seem the norm, it is how she mostly communicates.

After several conversations with staff, all shocked that she wouldn't wait one year until she could retire and get pension. Just resign. Most people thought she had a health issue and had to resign- maybe get disability.

I went into the manager on a fact finding mission. She said she had not told the admin at HQ (odd) or her family (also odd).

You know how these things are like wildfire- calls to family, coworkers not in, whispers at desks.

After calling a coworker, she asked if it was a April Fools Joke. My two ref coworkers disputed that, so until the end of the day I just couldn't make it add up.

Finally with my coat on, I asked if it was an elaborate April Fools Joke. Her -and another supervisor was there- said yes. She laughed and laughed. I basically said that it was a mean prank to play on the staff, that it was April 2nd when it all went down, and that she better tell the staff because half of them think she is dying.

She said she knew I would figure it out and say it didn't add up because I'm so smart.

I don't feel smart. I feel it went on too long, was kind of cruel, and put us all in the weird place of going in and asking about it. And it was unprofessional to me. She insisted I not tell anyone, but I did because I would hate to be left out and not know.

So it was weird day, drained me of energy. And it also made me kind of angry at the two staff people who knew yesterday and let the rest of us carry on.

So, what kind of fool am I?
